Boats, walking, nature tours | Riverland

Murray River Riverland

The Murray river, 6th largest in the world at over 2500 kms long, starts in the Snowy Mountains and meanders its way across Australia to its mouth near Goolwa, South Australia. A few small towns are built along its banks, but compared with other major rivers in the world, it is largely uncommercialised. It has an amazing abundance of wildlife, from kangaroos, emus, echidnas and wombats to the huge range of birds, including the every present pelicans that can always be found on the river.

Things to do

This is a region where any water sports can be enjoyed. Many people have learned to water ski along the Murray, although with its banks often full of fallen tree branches, it can be a dangerous place. Canoeing, walking trails, houseboating, cruising fishing and camping are the main pleasures to enjoy in this peaceful environment. If you are looking for serenity, then this is it!

Eco-tourism

This is a very important consideration when you travel in the Riverland as the eco-systems face many challenges because of modern day habits. Visitors are encouraged to take rubbish home, to leave plants untouched, to leave wildlife alone - take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints!
